Having children

Does having kids affect your dating life?

Having children produces a small, mixed net effect on male attractiveness. As a stated profile attribute it carries a modest penalty: a study of 251 single daters in the Journal of Relationships Research (Cambridge) found single parents and non-parents alike preferred childless partners. But active caregiving cues can reverse this; in Evolutionary Psychological Science, women (360 valid attractiveness ratings, 314 completing the full questionnaire) rated men photographed interacting with children as more attractive than men shown alone, though the effect appeared only in the photo task (not the written vignettes) and was strongest among women high in nurturance motivation. No cited study isolates part-time versus full-time custody, so any custody distinction is inference, not evidence.

How it factors into your fit: Score fatherhood as roughly neutral with a small net penalty of a few points, deducting slightly more for full custody than shared custody as an inferred availability cost.
